Water Flow, Ballo Burn, one of a series

In September 2024 I embarked on a Masters degree in Fine Art at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee. The year has been an amazing and fulfilling experience, which has given me the opportunity to explore and develop different aspects of my art practice, and made me re-evaluate what I do and why I do it. The course culminates in a degree show, open to the public from August 23rd to 31st.
Here are a few images of work which I have made during the course.

Castlelaw Slugs

My degree show for the MFA course at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art will be open to the public from August 23rd to 31st. The show consists of a body of work resulting from time spent on Castlelaw hill, which is close to my home in Abernethy. I made many trips up the hill & along the Ballo Burn, which runs along the foot of the hill, through the month of June. I created artwork in response to the location, working partly out on site, partly in the studio, using natural materials collected from the hill. Here are a few photos of pieces included in the exhibition.

'Water flow' work in progress, River Almond

Working practices, work in progress, ideas and inspiration.
Recently I have been spending a lot of time working outdoors, creating paintings using elements such as flowing water and natural materials such as river sand and leaves, letting the location be a co-creator of the work. Some paintings have been made entirely outside on location, others are started outside & then worked on in the studio, other pieces are made in the studio, using ideas and materials collected from the site.

In and Out of the Studio

Beachcomber 2

I never get tired of painting Scottish shores. Every seashell is unique, every one is beautiful. By looking closely at what is there, maybe we can appreciate the wonder & fragility of our marine environments.

The paintings in this gallery are mostly watercolours; some mounted & framed behind glass, others are mounted on board & protected with varnish so do not require framing.

May Night 3

Woods & forests are magical & complex habitats, constantly changing through the seasons. Local Scottish woodlands are a constant source of inspiration for my work.

Puss Moth Lifecycle

I work primarily in watercolour however some subjects work better in oils; different mediums each have their own challenges & possibilities.
